PostHeaderIcon Tiny Weenie Nuclear Batteries

We all know how massive nuclear power is, regardless of its destructive or peaceful usage. Imagine, if some of this power can be contained in a container with the size of our 1 cent coin, we could all solve our mobile devices power problem. We looking at you, iPhone! *grin*

Now, the idea is not far-fetched anymore, thanks to a team of researchers at University of Missouri, who are currently working on a micro-sized nuclear battery. Led by Jae Kwon, an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the university, they are planning the develop the battery into something even smaller than it's current coin-like size.

The size reduction is important as the main purpose of their nuclear battery is to power micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). To give an impression how much power that these nuclear batteries packs, Dr. Kwon said, "The radioisotope battery can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries,”. Pretty punchy for a little fella.

Nuclear batteries might sound pretty far-out but actually, it has been around since 1913. Of course, it is still not available in AA size at supermarket's shelves but who knows, Dr. Kwon and his team's research might evolve into that in the future.
