PostHeaderIcon TWITTER AND FACEBOOK COST BRITAIN'S ECONOMY BILLIONS

If productivity downtime can be converted into money, billions of ringgits are being flushed away in Britain, by office workers that used social networking sites during working hours. The claim was made by a recent surveythat involved 1,460 office workers around the country.

For just an average usage of 40 minutes a week, the survey estimated that Twitter and Facebook browsing are costing British economy around RM 7.61 billion (£ 1.38 billion) or possibly more, annually. That is equivalent to the cost of three SMART tunnels, with RM 1.82 billion to spare!

The number is pretty huge (almost to the point of absurdity), but is it really significant? Come to think of it, these social networking sites are just another outlet for these office heroes to take a little breather once in a while.

Sure, there are always "we are not paying you to Tweet all day long" statement but come on, corporate ladders are not the easiest thing to climb around. So, why not cut these guys some slacks? As long as they didn’t abuse their web surfing privileges, everything should be fine, right?
