PostHeaderIcon Final 3-D Blu-ray Specification Announced

If you wish to upgrade your big chunky television to a Full High Definition one, then think again because 3D is the next thing. Recently, the Blu-ray Disc Association finalized the specification for delivering 3D video with high definition; that’s right, full HD 1080p stereoscopic video on Blu-ray discs, and with a file size of only 50% larger.

The specification states that it will be encoding two separate 1080p frames together using Multiview Video Coding (MVC) extension to one of the codecs that is currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players (AVC), thus giving each eye a different view in Full HD resolution. MEPG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% more than similar 2D content. Every player and movie supporting to it will deliver full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, regardless of what 3D technology the display uses.

You’ll be glad to know that 3D discs are still backward compatible on 2D players, it’ll be pretty costly to switch all your hardware to 3D - a display that supports 3D along with a compatible pair of 3D glasses, and HDMI 1.4 that can transfer 2 full 1080p signals.
