PostHeaderIcon Nike Football Innovation Summit Showcase Upcoming Footie Techs

It is going to be three more months before World Cup sets in South Africa but we already felt the heat. It’s inevitable especially after seeing a number of new technologies that Nike’s national teams and players are going to don at the tournament showcased at Nike Football Innovation Summit event in London last week.

We were not there ourselves but through the wonder of Internet, we got tons of related information and pictures from the event specially for football geeks out there. So, jump in!

First off - the Mercurial Vapor Superfly II football boot. At a glance, the Superfly II might look exactly the same as the first Mercurial Vapor Superfly released last year, but as soon as you turned it over, you’ll know the difference. On its sole is a unique traction system that is designed for explosive acceleration called Nike Sense.

The new technology is contained within an adaptive stud that can extend and retract by up to 3mm, based on ground conditions and pressure exerted by the player. The stud works in tandem with directionally positioned blades that maximize cutting and allow for quick changes of direction and also, secondary toe traction that provides added toe-off power for those first critical steps. According to Nike, all these enable the boot to achieve greater speed in all directions.

As per the original Superfly, the Nike Flywire technology is also incorporated into Superfly II’s streamlined upper to give it a lightweight, strong and more dynamic fit. To top it off, the carbon composite tuned chassis provides a lightweight platform with traction elements that allows players to stay closer to the ground.

Meanwhile, as for the boot's purple colorway, Nike claims that it enhanced the boot's visibility on the field. That is according to their research, of course; although we believe many out there would not agree with it.

Also unveiled together with the boot is Master Speed, the latest chapter of Nike Football+ interactive self-training program that we have featured here before. Just like the Superfly II boot itself, the new drills and tips for the program are focusing on building player’s speed with the help of Brazil national team stars Robinho, Fabiano and Nilmar.

The update will also add a new segment to Nike Football+ program called “Inside the Elite”. The segment gives users an inside access to some of the world’s top players such as Robinho, Javier Mascherano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic whom will provide unscripted insights on their game and match preparation. Each pair of Superfly II will contain the access code to Nike Football+, the third such boot after Nike CTR360 Maestri and T90 Laser III.

Moving on, the next item that was unveiled at the Nike Football Innovation Summit – the new national kit for all Nike’s national teams that are going to compete at World Cup. These new kits are not just any ordinary clothing. Believe it or not, they are made from recycled plastic bottles. Seriously.

According to the company, all the discarded plastic bottles were sources from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and which are then melted down by their fabric suppliers to produce new yarn for the jerseys. Each jerseys are produced from up to eight recycled plastic bottles – how cool is that?

Using environmentally-concise manufacturing process doesn’t mean that they have to degrade the fabric performances. Instead, the new kit is now 15 per cent lighter than previous iterations and Nike has also made various other improvements on the new jerseys which give them better breathability, ventilation, airflow and movement.

Well, that’s all from last week’s Nike Football Innovation Summit. If you eager to check them out yourself, the new kits will be available at retail stores from March onwards while the new Mercurial Vapor Superfly II football boot will arrive in April.
