PostHeaderIcon Review: Logitech Anywhere Mouse M905

So you have a snazzy new laptop and you want to show it off at your local Starbucks, but your optical mouse is acting queer and refuses to work on the glossy table. Annoyed, you search through your bag and look for a mouse pad, but realize that no one lugs around a mouse pad and neither do you, so you whip out the next best thing – a torn off piece of paper from your notebook.

Talk about potong steam huh?

Well, mobile workers / students / out and abouters / <insert other valid reason for bringing a laptop to a Starbucks here>, if this scenario seems all too familiar to you, then you can heave a sigh of relief because Logitech is here to save the day with the spanking new Anywhere Mouse M905.

Story continues after the jump.

Powered by Darkfield laser tracking technology, the days of having to lug around a mouse pad (or suitably crafted replacement) are finally over! Aptly named the Anywhere Mouse series, Darkfield technology allows the new Logitech M905 to work on virtually any surface be it marble, metal, wood or even glass! It won’t work on water though, but then again, that’s not exactly something to be concerned about.

We won’t get into any more technical details of Darkfield (you can get more in-depth details here: http://tinyurl.com/yzcu4af), but it’s suffice to say that the prospect of being able to use a mouse on virtually any surface should be enough to get your attention.

As for the mouse itself, the M905 is a slick little number that comes with two thumb buttons on the left side of the body (configured by default to be the “back” and “forward” buttons), a programmable button under the scroller, and a left-right clickable rocking scroller (a click swaps it to hyper-fast scrolling mode) in addition to the left and right click buttons.

Weighing just about the weight of an iPhone, the M905 runs on a pair of AA batteries and connects to your computer via a very nippy USB receiver. The receiver itself runs on the Logitech Unifying (more information on Logitech Unifying here: http://tinyurl.com/yzcu4af) frequency, which means that it can also detect and synchronize itself with all your other Logitech Unifying compatible peripherals such as a keyboard, a num pad, or even another mouse (if you’d ever need more than one mouse. Pfft.), thus freeing up the rest of your precious USB ports.

The M905 feels solid to the grip, and the contours on the body let it fit comfortably in your palm. Take note though that it was specifically designed for right handers, so leftys might have to pass up on this one, well unless you don’t mind the thumb buttons being pinky buttons that is.

Finally, as with all Logitech products, all the buttons on the M905 can be customized to do virtually anything from performing a simple click to launching a specific program via the bundled Logitech SetPoint software suite.

Priced at RM309, the M905 certainly does fall into the upper echelon of luxury travel mice, but just think of how much sexier it’ll make your portable rig look. We’re certainly in love with ours, and occasionally lug around a glass mouse pad (thanks Logitech, but no, glass mouse pads aren’t included) just to show off.

Logitech products are distributed in Malaysia by Kaira Technologies Sdn Bhd (03 2026 1669) and Ingram Micro Sdn Bhd (03 7958 2180). More details on the Logitech Anywhere Mouse M905 can be found on the official Logitech website here: http://tinyurl.com/yzcu4af
