In the coming month of May, KL and PJ folk are in for a big treat away from the usual tech fare that we serve up daily here at Lowyat.NET. We've received word that the Malaysian International Ip Man Wing Chun Association is organizing the inaugural Malaysian Ip Man Wing Chun Festival at the 1 Utama Shopping Mall from the 20th to the 23rd of the month, and have promised us that you wont regret leaving your precious offline time if you drop by and check it out.

The Association has gone to great lengths to secure the import of various rare artifacts from China and Hong Kong that depict the lives of Wing Chun legend Ip Man, and his most famous student Bruce Lee, and will be available for viewing in separate exhibitions in the New Wing of 1 Utama. There will also be an exhibition on ancient Chinese weapons, where you'll get to check out the very weapons that kung fu legends used back in the day.

If these awesome historical exhibitions don't suit your fancy, then you might be more interested in spectating the art of Wing Chun in actual close quarter combat. The three day festival is also hosting the first ever World Wing Chun Championship in Malaysia where Wing Chun practitioners from around the region will be battling it out for the title of Wing Chun Champion.

More highlights of the festivities follow after the jump.

The peak of the celebrations is on the 22nd when the Malaysia International Ip Man Gala Dinner will be held at the Grand Ballroom of the One World Hotel. This gala spectacle will be officiated by our Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, and will be graced by special guests like Great Grandmaster Ip Chun (eldest son of Great Grandmaster Ip Man), the cast of the third installment of the Ip Man movie franchise (Yuen Piao, Dennis To and Rose Chan), and will be rounded off with a grand performance by the Federal and Selangor state instructors of the Malaysia International Ving Chun Kung Fu Federation.

Sunday, 23rd May, also looks like an exciting day because the Association will be attempting to etch their name in the World Guiness Book of Records with what they describe as "the biggest Wing Chun display in the world to date". Called the "1000 Person One Inch Punch Board Breaking" attempt, the last Guiness Records attempt went down in Hong Kong with the official count of 754 participants. The Association wants you to take part in this historical attempt, and since you only need to be a Malaysian citizen to qualify for participation, this is the perfect opportunity to try to break a wooden board with your bare fists. You know you want to, because we sure do!

Tickets for the gala dinner is RM200 per pax and are still available for purchase. Admission to the rest of the event - the World Wing Chun Championship included - is priced at the very reasonable price of FREE, so mark this one down on your calendars now!
