In the world that is currently dominated by iPhone, Windows Phone and Android smartphones, there are not much space left for the former king of the hill, Palm. Nevertheless, HP believes that the falling smartphone company still has some juices left in them and has just announced a deal to make them part of the HP family, few hours ago.
In the acquisition move that is worth around RM 3.86 billion (USD 1.2 billion), HP didn’t hide the fact that the reason behind their decision was for Palm’s powerful webOS mobile operating system.
“Palm’s innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP’s mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices. The smartphone market is large, profitable and rapidly growing, and companies that can provide an integrated device and experience command a higher share. Advances in mobility are offering significant opportunities, and HP intends to be a leader in this market.” - Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP.
Now that Palm and its mobile operating system have received a new lifeline, it is interesting to see where this deal will bring them to in the near future. We predict that the operating system will go beyond smartphones. Who knows…a HP Slate with webOS, maybe?
