PostHeaderIcon Twitter to finally unveil monetization plans

According to The New York Times, social media site Twitter will be unveiling their monetization plans sometime today. The NYT article calls the new revenue generating program "Promoted Tweets" and explains that paid tweets "will show up when Twitter users search for keywords that the advertisers have bought to link to their ads". Reminiscent of the Google Ad Sense model that tracks keywords and displays relevant ads, Promoted Tweets also aims to remain unintrusive to the user.
Twitter has been free to use, and free to develop for, ever since its initial launch back in 2007 and has experienced a growth chart that resembles a hockey stick - a short curve met by an almost straight line up. With 22.3 million unique visitors as of March 2010 as opposed to just 524,000 a year ago, there's little wonder why Twitter is getting ready to set its monetization plans into motion.
