PostHeaderIcon Android Overtakes Apple in the US Smartphone Market

It looks like the Google Android OS has successfully overtaken Apple in the U.S. Smartphone market, placing itself at the 2nd position with just a mere 8% behind RIM’s OS. According to The NPD Group, a market research company, their research reveals that during the first quarter of 2010, Android moved up the ladder with 28%, overtaking Apple’s OS of 21%. Although the research was based on 150,000 respondents, a spokesperson from Apple claimed that the number was very limited and didn’t reflect the actual influence of the iPhone OS worldwide.
"We had a record quarter with iPhone sales growing by 131 percent and with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up any time soon." – Natalie Harrison, Spokeswoman from Apple.
But of course the research is only based on results taken from online consumer research surveys each month and it’s based on Smartphone market rather than the overall operating system. If they included Apple iPod Touch and iPad, I think we’ll get a different set of result. We’ll see what happens when Apple unveils the 4th generation iPhone, I’m sure they can gain back their smartphone popularity in the U.S. and maybe claim back their position too.
